Before Your Surgery Outpatient Surgery Services

After you are registered, you will be taken to the Ambulatory Care Unit and given a hospital gown. You will be asked to remove any dentures, contact lenses, glasses and/or hearing aids. Please leave valuable jewelry and all other valuables at home. The nurse will ask you to sign operative and anesthetic consent forms, ask some questions, and test your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and breathing. Patients under the age of 18 must have consent forms signed by a parent or legal guardian and be accompanied by a parent of legal guardian. Any skin preparation required will be done at this time. If you are having a general or local anesthesia, your doctor will ask for an IV for you. Before your surgery, you may be given medication to relax. This medication is not a general anesthetic, but it may make you feel drowsy. Next, you will be taken from your room to the operating room where you will be cared for by an anesthesiologist, the operating room staff, and your own doctor.
