Cardiopulmonary Services
The Cardiopulmonary department at Highlands Regional Medical Center specializes in providing optimal care to all patients 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, ranging from adult, adolescent, pediatrics, to infants. Assisting all in reaching their fullest recovery potential by promoting appropriate treatment regimens and educational components.
All the therapists are credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care, licensed by the state of Florida, and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support to give our population of patients the highest quality of care. The Cardiopulmonary department is under the direct supervision of a physician medical director. The physician is board certified in the field of Pulmonary Disease and is an active member of the Medical Staff. The Highlands Regional Medical Center Laboratory provides College of American Pathologists accredited Blood Gas Laboratory with service 24 hours a day.
The Cardiopulmonary Department in conjunction with the Emergency Room has introduced the ResQPOD device for patient’s that enter the ER in cardiac arrest. The ResQPOD, an impedance threshold device (ITD), utilizes the interdependence of the body’s respiratory and circulatory systems to create a vacuum (negative pressure) within the chest during the recoil phase of CPR, which follows each chest compression. The ResQPOD prevents the influx of respiratory gases into the chest during the chest wall recoil (relaxation or decompression) phase, which lowers the intrathoracic pressure and draws more venous blood back to the heart. Improved blood return to the heart (preload) results in improved blood flow out of the heart (cardiac output) during the subsequent compression.
